Today we are plunged in the midst of a process of ethical and democratic evolution within a fragile society battered by constant change. Old bonds imposed on society in a heated ideological debate are now being jettisoning and this has loosened the foundations of traditional concepts, physical ones in sociological terms. So our sense of security, our feeling of being protected, has vanished and this has left us feeling disorientated and has caused philosophers like Nietzsche to contemplate our society in an anti-modern key evoking an aching want for something lost. This feeling has been exacerbated by the forms of progress which are transforming the world by shortening the distances and globalising customs and traditions; all of this leads to a lack of certainty. The result of this is an ethical relativism due to a deluge of information; yet there is no real knowledge and so comes about a collapse in values for a society which has no other benchmark than power and money. The role of the Lions is to prompt and collaborate with the Institutions in order to bring a positive input to society and to forge the way to a return to essential values such as respect for life and dignity of human beings and love for the common good.
